[missons] conference 2007

"The world is flat,” wrote Thomas Friedman, bestselling author. As a result of globalization, we live in times of tremendous and fast-paced change. A flat world has also changed the face of the Church. These changes have meant new opportunities and challenges for missions. Our flat world makes us more aware of the global inequities and extreme poverty facing many. We are more informed about the vast numbers of people groups living without ever hearing the good news of Jesus Christ. We have seen the devastation of AIDS. We have experienced terrorism and the clash of cultures and religions up close and personally.

We are observing the waning of Christianity in the West and growing hostility towards the Christian faith. Yet despite all these challenges, Christianity around the globe is growing like never before. Jesus said, “If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.” We cannot keep going on with business as usual. We know too much and have no excuse. The gospel compels us forward; the needs map out the path we and our church must take.

This year’s Missions Conference will explore how followers of Jesus can engage our flat world with the gospel. We will get to hear Carl Medearis speak about his work in the Middle East sharing the good news of Jesus with Muslims; Bob Foster, medical missionary, speak about the cost involved in following Jesus; and Teri McCarthy share how God can use global professionals to serve Jesus in missions. We are also excited to hear from our missionaries Andrew and Sophia S. as they talk about the burgeoning missions movement in East Asia, from Paul M. as he teaches about reaching people cross-culturally right here in Boston, and from Alberto and Joanna Parada as they share about their experiences in Paraguay. Some of the other highlights of the week will include our evening All Church events on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday. On Thursday, we are calling for a Day of Fasting and an Evening of Prayer for the world, our church and our city. Saturday will be a special “Love Boston Day!” where we put our faith into action, engaging in service projects all over the city.

We look forward to having you and your family join us during this special time. Don’t miss out on what God will be teaching us about following Jesus!
