  • Jesse Tree Ornament Exchange

    Jesse Tree Ornament Exchange

    Women

    December 2

    Details

A Jesse Tree is like a family tree in that it connects the major events and people in the Old Testament to the birth of Jesus. It’s based on the verse of Isaiah that says, “A shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse; from his roots a Branch will bear fruit.”

The season of Advent is all about preparing our hearts for the coming of the Christ child at Christmas. One way to do this with your family is to read through 25 daily scripture passages that go along with each Jesse Tree ornament. The scriptures start with creation and end with the birth of Jesus. Each day has a suggestion for an ornament/symbol that you can put on your regular Christmas tree or on a small tree that is used just for the Jesse Tree ornaments. You can choose to read the daily passage from a children's Bible like The Jesus Storybook Bible or another Bible of your choosing. If you are interested in crafting a set of the same couple ornaments (multiples enough for the number of women signed up) and then exchange them on December 2nd with other women who will craft different assigned ornaments, we will all leave with a complete set of Jesse Tree ornaments to share with our family during the season of Advent.  Ornament inspiration for crafting can be found easily on Pinterest or you can be creative with your own ideas for each day's symbol that represents your assigned scripture passage. There will be a light dinner provided the evening of our exchange. Sign up with Jessica Herndon here. She will assign ornaments to each woman.

Divorced? Separated? We can help. Find help. Discover hope. Experience healing. DivorceCare helps you recover from the pain of separation and divorce. DivorceCare is a support group that meets weekly. You’ll find a warm, caring environment and will come to see your group as an oasis in an otherwise difficult season of life. There are three key elements to your experience: video seminar, group discussion and a personal workbook.

Unless you’ve been there it’s hard to understand the hurt that comes from separation and divorce. That’s why many of your friends and family don’t fully understand what you are going through and don’t know how to best help you.

We understand. DivorceCare groups are led by people who have been through divorce and successfully rebuilt their lives. We understand how you feel because we’ve been in the same place. We’ll show you how to deal with the hurt caused by your separation and divorce.

DivorceCare is a network of 13,000+ churches worldwide equipped to offer divorce support groups. The program is non-demonominational and features biblical teaching for recovering from divorce or separation. When did you experience silence this past week? The past month? If we’re honest, silence doesn’t naturally find its way into many of our lives, yet it’s an incredibly powerful way God connects to us through Scripture and prayer. As we begin the Advent season, the Women’s Ministry team invites you to Quiet Morning to meditate on joy. Joy is a theme of Advent, even as we mourn the sin that necessitated Jesus’ Incarnation. There will also be optional readings of a couple of children’s books dear to Chris May’s heart. Materials will be available to guide you, and a light lunch will be provided. The cost is $5, and an RSVP is requested (link below).

Childcare is available! Please email Stephanie to let her know you need childcare.

Join us for our exploration of advent, as we look at Christmas through the eyes of those who have been brought joy in the midst of suffering. The greatest story ever told is filled with people who, like many of us, are deeply anguished, and it is this story's truth that has brought redeeming relief to the world. There is still Light, and we gather to honor this Light among us.

    Historical Note

The Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols was first sung in this wooden building (pictured right) which served as the first Truro Cathedral; it is said that the Rt. Reverend Edward White Benson, who originated the service in 1880, chose the time of 10:00 PM on Christmas Eve in order to “get the men out of the pubs early so they would not be drunk for the midnight service.” In 1918, Eric Milner-White, Dean of King’s College, Cambridge, adapted the service for use in the chapel at King’s. The service has remained virtually unchanged since that time, and has spread through all the world. The hymns and carols vary in each service (though it is traditional to begin with Once in Royal David’s City), but the readings and other spoken portions are always the same, even, traditionally, retaining the well-loved King James translation. The sound of the same words, year after year, becomes an echo of the unchanging significance and reality of the story. The music takes the role of reflecting on each text and exhorting the congregation. The tone of this worship service is both solemn and joyful, reflecting the intimidating grandeur of the story—from Fall to Incarnation—and rejoicing in the love of God and the redemption that is ours through Christ.
