Divorced? Separated? We can help. Find help. Discover hope. Experience healing. DivorceCare helps you recover from the pain of separation and divorce. DivorceCare is a support group that meets weekly. You’ll find a warm, caring environment and will come to see your group as an oasis in an otherwise difficult season of life. There are three key elements to your experience: video seminar, group discussion and a personal workbook.

Unless you’ve been there it’s hard to understand the hurt that comes from separation and divorce. That’s why many of your friends and family don’t fully understand what you are going through and don’t know how to best help you.

We understand. DivorceCare groups are led by people who have been through divorce and successfully rebuilt their lives. We understand how you feel because we’ve been in the same place. We’ll show you how to deal with the hurt caused by your separation and divorce.

DivorceCare is a network of 13,000+ churches worldwide equipped to offer divorce support groups. The program is non-demonominational and features biblical teaching for recovering from divorce or separation. Learn more about DivorceCare, or join our Meetup group to stay up-to-date on our meeting calendar.

making/breaking: artist lecture with Bruce Herman

    February 9

    Details

As part of the Engaging Current Issues Series, we turn to a focus on redeeming the arts.

making/breaking the role of “destruction” in the creative process

Bruce Herman, Lothlórien Distinguished Chair in Fine Arts Gordon College

When God creates (galaxies, stars, nebulae—as well as our little planet-home Earth)— there is always a role for paradoxically furious destructive energies in the midst God’s “creativity”. Poets, composers, painters—all artists, really—engage in an analogous process in their artistic practices. Something must die in order for there to be new life. (At least this side of eternity.) Painter Bruce Herman will share with us both the artistic and spiritual exploration in his own work that addresses this deep principle of making (and breaking).

    • Starts: February 9, 2020 / 5:30PM

Global health in cross-cultural settings can involve numerous complex situations. Many have accused global health practitioners, despite their best intentions, of cultural imperialism due to their imposition of certain (usually Western) norms and worldviews as they attempt to improve health in cultural settings different than their own. Many examples can be cited of times when foreigners have caused harm as they attempted to improve conditions for groups in other countries.

But is all advocacy for cultural change wrong? As an extreme example, one might point to human sacrifice as an area where even certain forms of cultural imperialism might be called for. Along the gradient there might be increasing gray areas for issues like foot-binding, female circumcision, differing views on mental health treatment, or even cultural practices for food or intake of different substances.

How should we decide what change to advocate for amidst cultural diversity? What should advocacy look like for outsiders in a different cultural environment?

    Panelists Include:

Jacqueline Bhabha, JD, MSc, Harvard School of Public Health: Professor of Global Health.

Clydette Powell, MD, US Department of Health and Human Services: Director for the Division of Health Care Quality (prior medical officer within the Bureau for Global Health)

Gloria Hammond, MD, MDiv, Bethel AME Church: Pastor (founder and executive director of My Sister's Keeper, an initiative for global health in Sudan)
