Day 23

Monday, December 19

Jake Lubinski

How many times have I promised the people in my life (my kids, wife, friends, or colleagues) that I’d do something? And how many times have I forgotten, changed my mind or just failed to do it? I’m not being overly hard on myself, many times I do keep my word, but to be human is to fail in our promises at times. In reading this Scripture, I’m suddenly struck by the massive scope of God’s promises combined with his follow through (he keeps all of them!).

In these few verses in Micah, we see a promise that’s made against all odds. Here is a reason for hope in the face of certain hardship. In our own lives, experiencing hardship and having the odds stacked against us sometimes seems hardwired into our existence. We will all experience some degree of this. But how reassuring to know that no matter what we’re up against, we can rest in theh knowledge that God keeps his promises. He gave us the promise of a ruler coming from the smallest of clans, the promise of a savior entering this world as a child born to Mary, the promise of that savior defeating an enemy in our fortresses, the promise of the resurrection, and the promise of his return one day to make all things right.

There may be no better time than during Advent to reflect on the magnitude of God’s kept promises as we anticipate his return. We can find incredible peace, even amidst difficulty, in knowing that he is powerful enough and faithful enough to keep his word.

And he shall be their peace (Mic 5:5).

Jake lives in Beverly and enjoys covincing his kids to go on bike rides with him.
