ANNOUNCEMENT

Today, members of Park Street Church voted to call the Rev. Mark L. Booker to be the sixteenth Senior Minister. This vote was preceded by an unanimous recommendation of the Senior Minister Search Committee, the unanimous approval of the Board of Elders, and the agreement of the Leadership Council.

We are incredibly grateful for the hard work and time commitment put in by so many people to bring us to this day: the hours devoted to foundational preparation by the first senior minister search committee; the diligence and intentionality of the second search committee; the resilience and teamwork of the Park Street Church staff during these years of transition; the leadership and wisdom of Phil Thorne; and the dedication on the part of the congregation to wholly and fully seeking the Lord. Above all, we are thankful to Jesus, our great Shepherd, who knows our hearts, who loves us, and who is with us always.

Details of Mark's installation will be coming in the next few weeks. In the meantime, please continue to pray for Mark and his family as they begin this transition, and the Board of Elders, the staff, and the congregation as we prepare to receive them.

Sincerely, David W. Rix, Moderator

CANDIDATE FOR SENIOR MINISTER

Rev. Mark L. Booker

On January 11, 2020, the Senior Minister Search Committee voted unanimously to recommend Rev. Mark L. Booker to the Board of Elders to be the sixteenth Senior Minister of Park Street Church. On January 22, 2020, the Board of Elders unanimously voted to approve this recommendation and present Rev. Booker to the Leadership Council. The Leadership Council concurred with the recommendation of the committee on January 29, and the members of the congregation called Rev. Booker to the position of Senior Minister on February 2.

We believe that Rev. Booker fulfills the qualifications set forth by the congregation. He is a substantive expository preacher, a humble visionary leader, a prophetic cultural ambassador, and a practical theological trainer. And, he is a loving and dedicated shepherd of his flock.

Rev. Booker has served as a pastor for fifteen years and is currently Rector of the Church of the Cross, an Anglican church in the Fenway/Kenmore neighborhood of Boston. He co-planted this church in 2009.

For more information about Rev. Booker and the Special Meeting of our membership on February 2nd, 2020, please see below.

Search Process FAQs

The timeline feels rushed. Why are there only seven days between the release of the candidate's name and the all-church vote?

A number of factors came into play in setting the date. (1) The Senior Minister Search Committee voted to recommend this candidate to the Board of Elders on January 11. (2) There needed to be time for the Board of Elders and the Leadership Council to meet the candidate, review his credentials, and vote. (3) The congregation needed to meet and vote before the Annual Meeting on February 26 to avoid changes in membership of the Board of Elders and the Leadership Council mid-process. (4) Park Street Church could not announce the candidate’s name until after he made an announcement at his church on January 26.  (5) Sundays other than February 2 were eliminated due to school vacations, other already scheduled events, and the Lenten season.

The congregation is voting at the Special Meeting on the day we first hear the candidate preach. How will I have time to make an informed vote?

As mentioned above, external factors dictated a compressed schedule. The elders had seven days to review information about the candidate and came to a decision. On the evening of January 26, the candidate’s name will be released to the congregation, along with background information and links to his sermons. The congregation will have seven days to review information and pray over this decision. In addition, the search committee and the Board of Elders will be available to communicate with any congregant who has questions.

How does the church voting process work? How many votes along each stage are required to approve the candidate?

In accordance with our Bylaws, the Senior Minister Search Committee voted on January 11 to recommend a candidate to the Board of Elders. This vote was unanimous. The Board of Elders voted on January 22 to approve the candidate with a minimum 75% affirmative vote. That vote was also unanimous. The Leadership Council will be voting on January 29, with a minimum 75% affirmative vote needed to approve the candidate. The congregation will be voting on February 2, with a minimum 75% affirmative vote needed to approve the candidate.

If I'm not part of the Leadership Council, can I attend the Leadership Council meeting?

The Leadership Council consists of the members of the Board of Elders, the Deacons, the elected officers of the church, the Nominating Committee, and members of the ministerial staff. In addition, the Moderator has invited non-voting members of the staff and of the first Senior Minister Search Committee to observe the meeting. Please be in prayer for this meeting on January 29.

Can I submit a vote for the Special Meeting by mail-in proxy?

No, the Bylaws do not permit a vote by proxy or by absentee ballot.

What should I do if I am unsure about my membership status?

Any questions regarding membership status should directed to the Clerk, Laura Roscoe.

Who in the church should I ask if I have questions?

Members of the Board of Elders and the Senior Minister Search Committee are available to answer questions. They can be reached by email at [email protected] and [email protected]. Emails for individual elders can be found here. Members of the Senior Minister Search Committee are listed here.

JUN 19

On JUN 5, the Board of Elders voted to approve three Elders (in addition to David Rix, the Moderator) to be Elder-representatives on the Senior Minister Search Committee, as governed by the bylaws. They also voted to approve that three congregants nominated by David Rix be brought to the Leadership Council for a vote. David called the Leadership Council to meet on WED JUN 19. At that meeting, the Leadership Council voted to approve the Candidates, thus providing the the required three or more members appointed by the Council and forming the new Senior Minister Search Committee.

The Search Committee will schedule and have their first meeting in the coming weeks. First to be discussed is the internal organization, including the method for review of minister-candidates provided by Richard Kidd. David has been in contact with Richard and he has begun searching for new candidates to provide to the Search Committee. The previous committee's requirements have been focused, but the (PDF) church profile is still relevant and in use, and you may refer candidates as well.

MAY 31

On MAY 31, the Board of Elders held a Q&A session, to inform the congregation about developments in the search process. Many of you asked questions online. You can now access answers to those questions on the same page. If you have additional questions, please send them to Elizabeth Lohnes, Director of Communications, and she will see to it that they get answered.
